Adam and his wife Jennene have been incredibly active in helping build community among the businesses at the Pepperell Mill Campus. It’s one of the things we love about being around such great people. And many of those businesses now turn to them in their role as accountants in Biddeford, so we’re excited to share a little about them on today’s blog.

Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Adam Hobson, and I own and operate Hobson and Company, a CPA firm here in the mill. I grew up in NH and then joined the military after college. I met my wife Jennene in Spokane, WA and we moved back here in 2004. We live in Saco with our two kids who go to Thornton Academy.
Tell me a little about your business?
We are a full-service accounting firm focusing on small businesses and self-employed people. We provide tax planning and preparation, bookkeeping, and payroll for many of our clients but we tailor our offerings depending on the client’s needs. We have many clients in and around Biddeford and have also seen lots of growth in Portland.
What made you choose the mill for your business?
We were in the front room of our house for the first two years until we could afford a “real office” three years ago and this seemed like the best fit. Biddeford in general is such a fast-growing town for small businesses, and it seems like the Mill is the hub of most of it.
The space is reasonably priced compared to what else is out there, and we have stayed here because of the great sense of community including both the staff and the other tenants. It has been awesome.
How long have you been doing this?
We’ve been in business for about 5 years.
What makes your business interesting to you?
It’s great getting together with people who have decided to try and make it on their own, and learning what they enjoy or do not enjoy about running their business. It’s great to be able to make a living helping people, and feeling the appreciation from clients is terrific.
What makes you stand out from others in the same industry?
We are a small firm that can offer a more personalized approach to this stuff than most larger firms, but have more capabilities than most smaller firms. I handle the tax planning and overall preparation of returns as well as the financial statement work. Jennene handles all bookkeeping and payroll for our clients through her business, Saco River Payroll.
We have Shawn who does most of our accounting and tax work, and our administrative assistant Nikki answers the phone, sets client appointments, and does anything not accounting or tax-related around the office. We also have an intern from UNE who is a senior there in the Business Administration program.
It’s a small team here so when you call it is one of us you talk to – not a call center or one of 30 people in the office that doesn’t know who you are.
We enjoy getting to know our clients and take pride seeing our clients grow knowing we had a small part in their success by taking this accounting and tax stuff off of their plate and letting them focus on running their businesses.
