Swimlids UV Protection Hats
Karen Gellis and her Swimlids UV Protection Hats
Karen’s studio sits in the North Dam Mill where the light floods through the windows each morning. And that is a perfect atmosphere for the stylish UV protection hats that she makes for sunny days with her children, and now for her company, Swimlids. It’s one of those stories where someone has a great idea, and a great new company is born.

Who are you and where are you from?
I’m Karen Gellis, I am from Massachusetts (originally) but live in Saco now.
Tell me a little about your business?
Swimlids is a mom invented UPF 50 sun hat for an active lifestyle. We offer a baseball style and a funky bucket. They stay on in the water, SUPing, kayaking, and more!
What made you choose the mill for your business?
I looked around to buy something but there wasn’t anything I wanted or liked….I liked the mill because it had a good vibe to it and I like that I am around other entrepreneurs.
How long have you been doing this?
I started making these hats for my children almost 3 years ago.
What makes your business interesting to you?
I love it because it’s a product that I created from a problem that I had with my kids on vacation. It was simply an idea that I brought to life.
What makes you stand out from others in the same industry?
There isn’t really anything exactly like our original Swimlid. Our product is meant specifically for people who are being active but also who need sun protection.
